Rapture

variable dimensions
etched mirror
2001

statement .  .  .

In 1991, a group of fundamental Christians, believing the end of the world was at hand, gave away all their possessions and climbed a mountain in Colorado to await the ‘Rapture’ (ascension directly to heaven). While their ascension of the mountain received considerable newspaper coverage, there was a remarked absence of accounts of what happened after the appointed day.

The word ‘rapture’ is etched in reverse on a mirror. Lit by a single light, the word projects onto the opposite wall. As the viewer walks through the space, the mirror vibrates and projection shimmers.
